Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian strikes on energy infrastructure continued even after Trump announced an energy ceasefire he said had taken immediate effect, the latest gap between a declared de-escalation and events on the ground in the war.
Trump posted word of the ceasefire deal over the weekend, a similar announcement to one he had made in September that was never fulfilled. In the hours and days that followed this latest claim, Russian forces reportedly struck a power plant and a gas production facility in the Kharkiv region along with a civilian gas station, and carried out drone attacks on Kyiv that left two people injured. A separate drone strike on a village near Kharkiv killed three people and injured nine others. Ukraine's air defenses said they intercepted or suppressed the large majority of Russian drones launched overnight, while Russian forces also struck port infrastructure and a bulk carrier near Odesa.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine remained willing to honor the ceasefire if Russia reciprocated, and signaled Kyiv was prepared to halt strikes on Russian refineries if Moscow stopped targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure in turn. He separately addressed the question of elections, saying a vote during wartime was not feasible and would require a ceasefire of at least 60 days to organize.
