A fresh wave of concern is building on Wall Street over whether the artificial intelligence investment boom has outpaced the financial discipline needed to sustain it, as hyperscalers ramp up capital spending and lean more heavily on debt to fund it.
Much of the recent anxiety has centered on CoreWeave, a cloud computing company closely tied to the AI buildout, after its stock slid and the cost of insuring against its debt defaulting rose sharply. Nvidia, which holds a stake in CoreWeave, has expressed confidence in the company's financial position, and recent earnings from chip manufacturers elsewhere in the supply chain have pointed to demand that remains robust for now.
Still, the broader warning signs have accumulated. Nvidia's march through successive trillion dollar valuation milestones has drawn increasing scrutiny, while prominent skeptics have taken bearish positions or openly described the sector as showing bubble like characteristics. Rising bond yields and borrowing costs have added pressure on companies attempting to finance enormous data center buildouts indefinitely through debt markets.
