Houthi forces based in Yemen have carried out a series of escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent days, including a missile strike that hit the headquarters of state oil giant Saudi Aramco and a weekend assault on Riyadh's airport that killed at least 20 people, among them a US citizen, and injured hundreds more.
The attacks mark a notable escalation in the Iran-backed group's reach and capability, with officials describing the strikes as employing increasingly sophisticated drone technology launched from well protected positions. The Houthis have said they intend to continue targeting energy infrastructure and airports, adding to concern across the region about the group's growing ability to hit high value targets well beyond Yemen's borders.
Washington's public response has so far been notably restrained. While US officials have condemned the attacks and warned of consequences, little concrete military action has followed, a contrast with earlier promises of a forceful response to provocations from Iran-aligned groups in the region.
Analysts point to the timing as a likely factor behind the measured response, with US midterm elections scheduled for early November. A broader military escalation risks pushing up gasoline and diesel prices at a politically sensitive moment, giving the administration incentive to avoid a confrontation that could roil energy markets before voters go to the polls. Some analysts say the restraint may prove temporary, describing the current calm as one that could give way to a sharper response once the election has passed, while others caution that Iran and its allies may be calculating the opposite, seeking to apply maximum pressure on Washington precisely while its political attention is focused elsewhere.
